This novel earned a good 4.6 stars on Amazon. From a writing craft point of view, this opening page needs editing right from the start. Here’s an opportunity to immerse the reader into a clearly traumatic and danger-fraught scene, and we get sentences such as:

Really? Considerable trepidation? When you’re waking up in the dark after being shot in the head? And then there’s the string of odd alternatives for his situation that include tigers. Really? This is what’s going on in the character’s mind after being shot in the head? More than that, all this considerably irrelevant exposition keeps the following from being on the first page:

And yet . . . the opening sentence is a strong hook that raises a strong story question. The question is reinforced with the information buried in the text about the high-school chum aiming a pistol at his forehead. That was enough to get me to turn the page to see the segment above. But the writing had better improve rapidly or I’m outta there. Your thoughts?

Here’s the opening page of The Depths . Would you read on? How does it perform? Should this author have hired an editor?

“Hello?" Jen answered the phone in an agitated, yet confused tone. Who was calling at this hour? It was past ten o'clock on a Wednesday night, and Jen normally would have been pouring herself a glass of red wine before bed.

No response.

Again, she spoke into the cellphone. Louder and more direct this time. "Hello?" She heard shuffling on the other end; fumbling. Then a breathy sound.

It sounded like breathing, but no words were spoken. She frowned, taking her phone from her ear and pressing "End." The number flashed once—an unknown caller—and then was replaced by the home screen.

Weird, she thought. It must have been a wrong number or an accidental dial. Her son, twelve-year-old Reese, would have called it a "butt dial" or something like that. She laughed to herself, placing the phone back into her coat pocket.

A gust of brisk February air forced Jen to walk faster. Her car was on the other end of the commuter lot, a five-minute walk from the campus. After tonight's lecture, she'd stayed late answering questions and grading some papers before leaving the darkened halls of the Massachusetts Maritime Academy.

Mark Adams, her husband, hadn't called, meaning everything with Reese was (snip)

This novel earned a 3.8 stars on Amazon. Two things impact my votes on turning the page. The first, and most important, is tension created in me by a compelling story question. Even so, the quality of the writing is the second important thing to consider. In fact, really high-caliber writing and voice can provoke a page turn even if the story question isn’t that strong.

We’ve written countless posts about studies which show the film industry is no where near an equal playing field for women as it is for men. Women are given less opportunity to be in positions of power, and we are under represented both in front of the camera and behind it. Stereotypes still exist and persist.

Thankfully there are some alternative routes into the business proving to be quite fruitful for women. Crowd-funding platforms and indie films have seen a larger percentage of women’s stories being made and brought to life on the big screen.

While there are more opportunities to make a film, what about getting it out to the masses? Sure you can use social media and word of mouth, or if you’re lucky, get a write-up in a big newspaper or magazine. But for those who aren’t familiar with the inner-workings of the film industry, distribution is seen as the hardest nut to crack, and it is essentially the gatekeeper between making your film a fan favorite, or having it shelved in obscurity.

Distribution costs a lot of money, and studios spare no expense with their blockbusters. But because of this the filmmaker is often the last person to ever get paid. It seems like a complete waste of time if you go about it in the traditional sense. But there is one woman who has literally turned the old, impenetrable film distribution method upside down, and has created a model that allows filmmakers to make “the lions share” of the money.

Scilla Andreen is the CEO of TOMS Womens Canvas SlipOnBlack7 M UjTX3bs
, an online movie streaming service similar to Netflix where you pay a monthly fee ($5) to access their library of over 8000 titles. The Seattle-based power woman started the company in 2005 and is defying Hollywood standards left, right and center.

Scilla is a filmmaker by trade but started out studying Political Science at NYU. She fell in love with a director and dropped out in her sophomore year to start working in the entertainment industry as a stylist/costume designer. Fun fact, she has been nominated for an Emmy Award in costume design for her work on ‘The Wonder Years’.

During her years dressing actors, she started producing her own short films and going to film festivals. She realized this was her passion and discovered a common thread amongst her fellow filmmakers.

“No one had distribution, and those that did, didn’t make any money.”

Scilla eventually made her own feature film, and got distribution offers from 3 major Hollywood studios, one of which offered her a $100,000 advance. When you are an up-and-coming filmmaker that amount sounds like you’ve hit the jackpot. But it bugged her that in the contracts she was presented, the deliverables cost a lot of money, and the studio would own the film.

“My friends told me I was insane if I didn’t take the deal, but when I looked closer at the fine print, I saw that there was no cap on expenses to release the film. Which meant potentially I could technically owe money to the distributor, and never see a dime” she said.
